    Description

An excellent condition & all original cast iron paint decorated cribbage board. This cribbage board is known as the Hedgehog. This was designed by & patented by John Gill who obtained the patent # 40999 which was assigned to him on 12/22/1863. The board is painted with a black background color & has many delicately & beautifully detailed designs painted in gold & dark red. The board was made in Connecticut.
The paint is in wonderful condition, has a lovely patina, & only shows slight wear. The board measures 10 9/16 inches long by 3 1/2 inches wide. The height with the pegs down is 1 7/8 inches & with the pegs up is 2 7/16 inches. The weight of the cribbage board is 4 pounds & 9.5 ounces. The substantial weight & sturdy construction gives the feeling that this visually wonderful & exciting cribbage board could easily last a thousand years or more.
The example we are offering in this listing is guaranteed to be 100% original & complete & in working condition. This was designed with all of the pegs attached to the board so that none of the pegs could get lost. Each side of the board has 60 pegs. Down the center row of the board there are 18 standard size pegs as well as three larger pegs. So, there are 141 pegs total. The three larger pegs are for keeping track of the games won. All of the pegs still move up & down.
There are no breaks to the iron, no chips, no cracks, no repairs, & no touch-ups to the paint. The cribbage board even retains a major portion of the large original paper label underneath. Some of the label is partially readable with some parts hard to read or showing some paper loss. Readable on the label is: "John Gill's Improved Cribbage Board And Whist Combination Patent". There is additional wording which we are not able to read on the label. Under the base are the four tiny circular original brass feet which elevate the board slightly.
The paint shows very minor wear from use. But, the major majority of the finely detailed original paint is still present. The paint is entirely original in all respects & has a pleasing natural patina from age. We have dusted the top lightly with a very soft delicate brush. Light dust remains between the pegs. The cribbage board has never been cleaned or tampered with in any way. An exceptionally pleasing example of this classic & wonderful design which is one of the most appealing of all cribbage boards.
